Polymers are a macromolecule or also called a giant molecule composed of several monomers (simple small molecules). Small molecules / monomers that make up polymers can be either double-bonded compounds or compounds that have functional groups. PROPERTIES OF POLYMER Polymers are macromolecules which consist of many classes of natural and synthetic materials and have very diverse properties. Length of polymer chain The longer the polymer chain, the higher the strength and melting point of the compound. b. Style between molecules
The greater the force between molecules in the polymer chain, the polymer will become strong and difficult to melt. c. Branching Many branching polymer chains have low tension and melt easily. d. Cross ties between polymer chains The more crosslinking the polymer will become more rigid and brittle so that it is easy or easily broken. This is because the cross-linking between polymer chains causes rigid tissue and forms hard material. e. Crystallinity of polymer chains The higher the crystallinity, the polymer chain will become stronger and more resistant to chemicals and enzymes. Usually those with high crystallinity are polymers with a regular structure, whereas irregularly structured polymers tend to have low crystallinity and are amorphous (not hard).
