Plastic materials gradually began to replace glass, wood and metal. This is caused by plastic which has several advantages, namely: lightweight, strong and easy to form, anti-rust and resistant to chemicals, has high electrical insulation properties, can be made in color and transparent and cheaper process costs. PLASTIC RAW MATERIAL THERMOPLAST POLYPROPYLENE (PP) Polypropylene is a crystalline polymer produced from the polymerization process of propylene gas. Propylene has low specific gravity compared to other types of plastic. Polypropylene has a very high melting point (190 - 200 oC), while the crystallization point is around 130 - 135 C. Polypropylene has a high chemical resistance (hemical resistance), but its impact strength is low. POLYSTIRENE (PS) Polystyrene is the result of polymerization of styrene monomers, and where stirene monomers are obtained from the dehydrogenation process of ethyl benzene (with the help of catalyst), while ethyl benzene itself is the result of reaction between ethylene and benzene (with the help of catalyst) . General properties of poly styrene: 1.Mechanical properties. The prominent mechanical properties of this material are stiff, hard, and have metallic sound when dropped. 2.Chemical resistance. PS resistance to chemicals is generally not as good as the resistance possessed by PP or PE. PS dissolves in ether, aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorinated hydrocarbons. PS also has low water absorption, below o, 25%. 3.PS Abrasion resistance has a relatively harder surface strength compared to other types of thermoplastics. However, this material is easily scratched. 4.Transparency of the optical properties of PS is a very high degree of transparency. Can through all light wavelengths (A 90%).
